DIVE INTO SANTA CRUZ

WANDERING AMONG GRAFFITI

A route through the capital's urban art

If you are thinking of visiting the capital, we suggest an alternative itinerary to know Santa Cruz from another perspective. The idea is to locate the murals created under the framework of "Sumérgete en Santa Cruz", a project whose leitmotiv is to give artistic value to the abandoned walls of the city with first class artists. So while you go shopping or testing the local gastronomy you can also discover the most artistic side of the island.

Start the day trip between Calle Castillo and Calle El Pilar, and continue towards El Toscal, the old fishing district of the city. There you will find many works that are the result of the collaboration of different Canarian artists. As Iker Muro, the project coordinator, explains, the result is a whole where disparate styles, abstract and flat forms are mixed with organic and voluptuous elements. Wherever you look, you have details to stop at, as the works have become species of tablecloths full of textures and plots. At night you can stroll along the Noria, one of the coping areas in the centre, and find under the Serrador bridge the "Capilla del Color", one of the most representative works of Matías Mata, alias Sabotaje al Montaje.

THE PROTAGONISTS

From the Canary Islands to the whole world

This project of revaluation of the city through urban art began more than five years ago, between the collaboration of the "Fundación Cepsa" and the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This initiative now has more than twenty large-format works that have managed to provide artistic and cultural content dividing walls in a state of total abandonment.

The artists who have participated in the initiative are Carmen Cólogan, Matías Mata, Txemy Basualto, Tanausú Alemán, Diego Mena, Acaymo Padrino, Víctor Pacheco, Shirley Wintsch, Diego Izquierdo, Louis Lambert, Ione Domínguez, Lauro Samblás, Arián León and the project coordinator himself, Iker Muro. Many of them have an international artistic career and often work abroad collaborating with major fashion brands such as Adidas, Converse and Nike.

INFORMATION

Soon the illustrative brochure of the route "Dive into Santa Cruz " will be available in paper in all the offices of Tourism of Tenerife, and its digital version will be diffused and will be downloadable through the social networks of the City Council of Santa Cruz. Until then we'll leave you a map with our favourite graffiti. Enjoy the walk!
